![]() During the Crusades and global trade was being reintroduced, Lingua franca became a common language used for international business. Landless people moved into the cities for work and trade. This helped prevent famine by ensuring a back-up crop in case one harvest failed.Īdditionally, over time rural population growth called for the use of common strips of land to be combined with larger private farms. The remaining fields were split between early and late crops, resulting in two harvests. This system was an innovation of the Middle Ages in which one-third of the farmland was left fallow, or unplanted, each season. Most agricultural land was farmed according to the three-field system. Small, independent economies arose, centered on large agricultural manors.
